You can’t manage time. You can’t find any additional hours. You don’t have any more time in a day, a week, a month, or a year than anyone else. There is only one thing that needs to be better managed for you to produce the results you want, and that one thing is you. Welcome to Me Management.

To make the most of your time, you have to ruthlessly prioritize. You have to make decisions about who and what is most important to you. Your calendar has boundaries because time has boundaries (I know science doesn’t support this, but it feels this way to us humans). You have to decide who and what goes on your calendar, and so you are forced to decide who and what doesn’t make it into any of the little blocks of time indicated on your calendar.

The decision as to who and what doesn’t command your time is every bit as important as the decision as to who and what does.

When you see someone producing in their life the very results you want, you can be certain that they are prioritizing the things that produce those results. But what you can’t see is what they are saying no to. You can’t see all of the things they refuse to do because it interferes with those results. When someone is producing the results they want, you can be certain they are saying yes to what they consider to the big things in their life by saying no to things that they believe are unimportant.

The calendar forces you to make decisions as to what you do with the time you are given. It forces you to prioritize. It forces you to say no to small things to make room for bigger things.

If you can’t say no, then you don’t have a big enough “why” driving the actions that make it onto your calendar.
