It’s not “out there.” It’s not something external. It’s not someone or something else. It’s you. Own it.

Accept It

There is only one way to improve your results. You have to own the fact that you’re the only thing standing between you and the result you want. And the first step to owning that fact is accepting it.

That means there is no blaming someone else for the fact that you aren’t where you want to be. It isn’t your sales manager. It isn’t your clients. It isn’t your competitors. It isn’t the President of the United States. It’s you.

It means no blaming something else. It isn’t the economy. It isn’t your sales collateral. It wasn’t your upbringing. It wasn’t your education or lack thereof. It wasn’t where you were born or where you grew up. It’s you.

The sooner you accept this fact, the sooner you can start producing better results. You accept that you alone are responsible for your results. You accept responsibility. You say to yourself (and anyone else who will listen), “I am responsible for where I am now.”

Embrace It

There isn’t anything that makes you weaker than avoiding ownership of your results and your failures. If it’s someone else’s fault, then you are powerless to do anything about it.

Embracing that you are responsible for where you are right now is super-empowering. Once you accept the fact that you alone responsible for your results, you embrace that fact by believing that you alone have the power to do something about it. You have the power to change whatever needs changing: you!

The first change that always need to occur before you get the results—and the life—you want is embracing that you have the power to change.

Own It

You accept your responsibility. You embrace it. Now do something about it.

Your sales results aren’t what you want them to be? Start changing whatever it is that needs to change for you to produce the results you want.

Hate your job? Do you hate your job because you are getting out of it exactly what you are putting into it? Then change you. Do you hate it because it isn’t what you should be doing or where you should be doing it? Put you somewhere else doing something else.

You need a better education. Change the part of you that spends time doing something else when they could be taking a class or reading. The only thing standing between you and an education is a few hundred dollars worth of books.

The only way that you can own that you are responsible for the results you produce is to do something about it. Accepting it isn’t enough. People that only accept it stop blaming other people but say things like, “That’s just the way I am.” They haven’t embraced that they have the power to change. Embracing it isn’t enough either. Knowing you have the power to change and not exercising that power is the same as not having it.

You have to own it. You have to accept that you alone are responsible for the results you produce, embrace that you have the power to change them, and then take action to change what needs changing.

Questions

What result in your life are you unhappy with now? What could be better?

Have you fully accepted that you alone are responsible for that result? Or are you still blaming someone or something else?

Have you embraced that you have the power to change any part of you that needs changing? Have you accepted the fact that, regardless of what it is, you can change it?

What actions do you need to take to own it?
