The speed of technological development is outpacing human growth and development.

Technology is advancing at a staggering clip with no signs of slowing. The technologies themselves are improving, and our ability to apply technology to our lives is providing greater benefits and more options.

Our use of technology is nothing new. How we are using technology, however, is new. We once used technology to assist with physical labor. Now we are using it to assist with our ever-increasing cognitive workload. And this is mostly a good thing.

But because we can count things, like clicks, we use technology to count, pretending that this is insight. We think that more data is greater wisdom, when often it is simply more data. Because we can automate things, even things that should not be automated, we automate, eliminating the need for a human being to do that work.

We want our technology to tell us our future. We want to leverage its capacity for something like cognitive work to enhance our intelligence. And, over time, there is no doubt that we will.

Sex is Better than Sexting

Sex is still better than sexting. Relationships still matter. Human beings are, for the time being, still very much human.

All human beings start out knowing nothing. We have to be taught everything from scratch, each new human requiring all of the “programing” that was required of the humans who came before us. Technology can be programmed much more quickly.

The major challenges we face in business, in sales, and in all other areas of our messy lives are not going to be solved by technology. If you have a challenge now, there is almost certainly a human on the other end of it. The problems are created by humans, and for now, must be solved by humans. This means psychology is more important than technology. It also means we need to develop faster.

How We Develop

  • Wake Up: Human beings need to keep pace by waking up, discovering that we aren’t all separate from each other.
  • Grow Up: We need to grow up, developing our different intelligences, including our moral intelligence.
  • Clean Up: We need to clean up, taking care to deal with our shortcomings, apologizing, and making amends where necessary.
  • Show Up: And then we need to show up, being present, and bringing our whole selves to our human endeavors.

We also need to speed up. The better results we want in business, sales, and life aren’t going to come from technology, even though it is going to continue to help us immeasurably, and in ways we can’t yet imagine. The better results are going to come from advancing human development, body, mind, spirit, and soul.
