Dave Stein comments here that maybe Senator Obama has not yet closed the deal, and so must keep selling. He may be correct. Sticking with the sales analogy, I think this contract is inked and there is no way for the clients to back out of the deal without doing irreparable damage to themselves in the process.
If Dave is right that the candidate needs to keep selling, I insist that Senator Obama needs to discontinue adding new content to his message. Sometimes when you are winning, it is best just to win–there is no reason to try to extend the lead.
In my opinion Senator Obama could also do without anybody else adding content to his message. See this New York Times article in which Senator Obama again has to distance himself from the controversial Reverend Wright (who, among other things, insists that the United States government may have started Aids).
I can’t help but think of the hapless sales rep who has closed the sale only to have his sales manager visit the customer to "help." Sometimes "help" is the last thing you need.
Note: This is politics, and politics involves selling. That I find interesting. However, this is not a political blog. I am not expressing my opinion about any of the candidates. As such, I will not post blatantly (and banal) political comments in support or opposition of any candidates. If you have a sales angle as interesting as Dave’s, oblige us.
